PRESS RELEASE – The Springfield Soccer Club traveled to Memphis, TN April 25-26th, 2009 to compete in the Adidas Soccer Elite GRRRLS Spring Championship. The Springfield S.C. 95/95 I Girls captured the Under 13 Gold Division Championship and the Springfield S.C. 96/97 Red Girls advanced to the Semi-Finals of the Under 12 Gold Division before being eliminated in a penalty kick shootout. “This past weekend was a great statement for a couple of our girl’s teams. We travelled to what is known to be one of the top events in the Mid-South Region and compete in the Gold Flight against some great teams from Tennessee, Arkansas, Kentucky, Missouri and Mississippi. We pride our teams on their availability to step outside of local state level tournaments and compete against top clubs from throughout the country. This weekend was just another validation of how being in the right environment allows you to compete against top teams.” said Jeremy Alumbaugh Director of Soccer Operations for the Springfield Soccer Club. The SSC 95/96 I Girls started the weekend off with a 2-0 victory over the Arkansas Rush Academy team on Saturday. They continued round robin play with a 4-1 victory over Golden Triangle FC in the later game on Saturday. During the Semi-Finals they defeated Revolution FC by a final score of 3-0. The Championship game would match up Knoxville FC Crush vs. SSC in a demanding game for both teams. At halftime the score was 0-0 with neither team able to find a goal. After going down 0-1 late in the game the girls responded with two goals in the final 15 minutes to capture their third tournament championship of the year with a 2-1 victory. The 13 I girls will now put their full focus into the Heartland League (Kansas City) Division 1 after being promoted from Division 2 following their league championship in the fall.
The SSC 96/97 Red Girls also got off to a quick start with a 2-0 win over Mid South SC before falling 0-2 to Lou Fusz Strikers on Saturday evening. The Semi-Final saw a back and forth battle where the winner would not be determined until after a penalty kick shootout. CSA Lobos ended up prevailing in the shootout ending a solid weekend for the 12 Red Girls. “This team has really progressed from the fall to indoor to spring season.” said Alumbaugh. “In the Fall we took 2nd Place in the Blitz United (Tulsa, OK) Gold Division and have done nothing but improve since then. We were a little unlucky in the shootout, but you have to get those types of experiences in order to grow as a team.” Currently the 12 Red Girls are undefeated while playing up in the Under 13 Girls Division at Lake Country Soccer.
